You’ve heard the old saying, “A picture’s worth a thousand words”, but SpecFicNZ is about to change that up. We think a quality, professionally designed cover is worth a thousand words– a thousand of your words, to be more specific.
That is why we are thrilled to announce our latest contest, A Cover’s Worth a Thousand Words, coming in August 2012 with the Grand Prize of a complete cover design package from Kura Carpenter Design.
Who can enter?
Any current paid-up member of SpecFicNZ with a completed speculative fiction work (short story, novella, or novel) who would like a professional cover design (in e-book and print format) for that work. Keep in mind that Kura Carpenter does photo manipulation cover design, not illustrative cover design. If you are unsure of the difference, be sure to check out Kura’s website for samples of her work.
What should you enter?
Entries should be the first 1,000 words of the speculative fiction work you are hoping to win the cover for. Please do not stop mid-sentence. Finish your entry at the last sentence before you reach the thousand word limit. Word count should be assessed by using your word processor’s word count feature. Entries over a thousand words will not be accepted. Entries that have been previously self-published are allowed.
When should you enter?
Submissions for the contest open August 1st, 2012 and close August 31st, 2012. If less than ten member entries have been submitted by August 22nd, the contest will be opened for the final 9 days for non-member entries.
How to enter:
E-mail the first 1,000 words of your entry in an attached rtf document to email@example.com with the subject line Cover Contest: (Your name). Entries should be formatted for on-line display- this means no paragraph tabs or indents and single spaced with a double space between paragraphs. In the body of your e-mail entry, please include your name, contact information, title of your entry, and its complete length (ie- short story, novella, or novel).
How the contest will be judged:
All entries will be screened by members of the SpecFicNZ committee in early September. Three finalists will be chosen to be publically posted on the SpecFicNZ website for public vote. The public vote will determine the Grand Prize Winner. This means that by entering the contest you are giving SpecFicNZ permission to post your 1,000 word entry publically on the internet, and use it for promotional purposes during the contest.
What do you win?
A full cover design package from Kura Carpenter Design (up to twenty hours of design time, which is twice the average) plus US $30 worth of photo stock for that design. Any photos required over US $30 will be the responsibility of the winner, not Kura Carpenter or SpecFicNZ.
Please be aware that Kura needs a minimum of 4 weeks lead time to begin your project, should you win. It could be sooner than that, but there are no guarantees as she may be working on other projects for other clients.
What to do now:
Go polish that first 1,000 words and get ready for August 1st.
