Margaret Mahy, ONZ 12 March 1936 – 23 July 2012
Margaret Mahy, one of New Zealand’s best-loved authors, died on Monday, following a brief illness.
Mahy leaves behind 100 picture books, 40 novels and 20 short story collections. She was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for her contribution to children’s literature. She was the first writer from outside Britain to be awarded the Carnegie Medal in Literature.
Prime Minister John Key said that Mahy “is widely acknowledged as one of this country’s finest authors, and one of the world’s greatest writers of children’s and young adults’ stories.”
