Last year SpecFicNZ ran a novella-writing competition in partnership with Wellington-based Paper Road Press, offering our members the chance to win prize money and potential publication in Paper Road Press’ SHORTCUTS series. The titles of the first six SHORTCUTS stories have now been released and we’re happy to see that not only are four of the stories from the original competition (including the first-, second- and third-place winners) but all six stories are authored by SpecFicNZ members!

The first series of SHORTCUTS features the following stories:

Mika, by Lee Murray and Piper Mejia

Bree’s Dinosaur, by A.C. Buchanan

The Last, by Grant Stone

Pocket Wife, by I.K. Paterson-Harkness

Landfall, by Tim Jones

The Ghost of Matter, by Octavia Cade

Congratulations to you all!

The novellas are being published one per month, starting with Mika this month, and will be available both as individual ebooks from Amazon, Kobo and other ebook vendors, or by subscription to the full series at Gumroad. Subscribers get a small discount on the per-story cost, and receive each novella direct to their inbox on publication.

Paper Road Press is currently seeking submissions for At the Edge, an anthology of liminal speculative fiction from Aotearoa New Zealand. See their website for more details.
