Flash Fiction / Poetry competition

Entry is free to members of SpecFicNZ. A fee of NZ$15 per entry applies for non-members.

 

Conditions of Writing Competition:

  • Create an original flash fiction story or poem (not published anywhere else) with the theme:

‘Temperance’

  • Your piece of writing, including the title, must be no more than:
  • 1000 words for flash fiction
  • 300 words for poetry
  • Your piece may include elements of speculative fiction (this includes elements such as: supernatural, science fiction, fantasy, horror, and/or weird)
  • Entry is free for SpecFicNZ members and $15 for non-members
  • Maximum of one entry per person in each category (flash fiction and/or poetry)
  • All entries must be received by 12 am (midnight) NZST on Friday 24th October 2016

 

Formatting:

  • be typed using Times New Roman font, 12pt
  • be formatted with 1.5 line spacing
  • be paragraphed
  • be written in English as the main language
  • be accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • include: your full name, personal email address, word count and title at the top left hand corner of your first page (see template below)
  • Identifying information will not be seen by judging panel

Entry Instructions:

  • Put your full name, Title of Text, and category (Flash or Poetry) in the subject line of your email
  • Attach as a .doc or .docx file

Judging

*           All judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into

*           Winners will be notified by email and results posted on SpecFicNZ website http://specfic.nz/

*           Selected work may receive editing suggestions from our editors / judges

*           Work will not be returned to you

*           Electronic submissions only

 

Publication

    • SpecFicNZ anticipate publishing an anthology of the best speculative fiction by New Zealand authors in 2016/2017, as an e-book and possibly in print, in 2017. The winning stories from this competition may be included in this anthology as a part of the prize package in agreement with the winning authors.

 

  • Entry is considered authorisation to use the author’s name in publicity published on the SpecFicNZ website relating to the competition
  • Work selected for the anthology may undergo minor editing prior to publication where reasonably required, in a collaboration between the author and an editor offering their services on behalf of SpecFicNZ.
  • Copyright remains with the individual authors

 

 

Any royalties generated from sales of any SpecFicNZ published anthology will be used by SpecFicNZ for the continuing financial support of members through grants and sponsorship of specific related activities

 

Prizes

*           First place        NZ$100

*           Second place   NZ$50

*           Third Place       NZ$25

 

  • Payment will be made by bank transfer within 21 days of confirmation of account details from winning entry author(s)
  • If the author of a winning entry cannot be contacted within 14 days of notification – the prize will be transferred to another entry

There is a $15 fee for non-members. Fee must be paid prior to the competition deadline, to SpecFicNZ, 38-9017-0007197-00. For the deposit reference write ‘Temperance’ and the pen name you have entered with.
