About

Simon’s formative years (as well as some years that should have been formative, but weren’t) were spent on the plains of North Canterbury. A research scientist by trade, his interest in SF is lifelong, but he only seriously started writing the stuff in 2006. He’s been published in places as diverse as Aurealis, Semaphore Magazine, Sybil’s Garage, Kaleidotrope and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Several of his stories have been shortlisted for the SJV (Sir Julius Vogel) awards, and / or for the Aurealis and Ditmar awards. Some online examples of his fiction can be found at his website; those curious for more may wish to seek out his short-fiction collections, Wide Brown Land: stories of Titan, Murder on the Zenith Express: the Gordon Mamon collection and 80,000 Totally Secure Passwords That No Hacker Would Ever Guess, and his SF/mystery novellas, Flight 404 and Matters Arising from the Identification of the Body, all available (in both print and electronic form) from the usual suspects.

The three elements central to Simon’s writing style are scientific detail, humour, and the Oxford comma.

Simon is a former member of the SpecFicNZ core and the winner of three SJV awards: in 2010 for Best New Talent and in 2013 and 2018 for Best Novella / Novelette (Flight 404 and Matters Arising from the Identification of the Body respectively). Aside from writing, he’s a member of the Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild, an itinerant typesetter for several small-press and indie publishers, and a four-time judge for the Aurealis Awards.
