Here’s my review of THE BONE CLOCKS by David Mitchell. I found the fantasy elements…problematic. If anyone else has read it I’d love to discuss.

Interesting. The last section was excellent, it’s set in the 2040s.

Just finished THE BONE CLOCKS by David Mitchell. Started off in the assumption that it would be literary fiction but then it turned into a fantasy novel – on the Booker longlist, no less! Anyone else read it?

Yeah, I feel like whoever put together the list hadn’t actually read the Discworld series but knew it was popular so just put the first one. Small Gods is one of my faves.
It’s interesting how many people say that. It’s almost the only one I don’t have a copy of, because it’s one of my least favourites – more cynical than the others, for one thing. But I realise I’m very much in a minority.
My personal favourite is Carpe Jugulum, because Granny Weatherwax is so hardcore.
When I grow up I want to BE Granny Weatherwax.
Oh, if only.

I would have picked a different Pratchett (I don’t think the first few are as good as some of the later ones).

This strikes me as a list of SFF by people who don’t actually read SFF. Nothing by Octavia Butler? No _The Sparrow_? No Iain M. Banks? Pish.
