Rachael began her working life as an English Teacher after completing a degree in Classical Studies and Drama at the University of Canterbury. She dabbled in acting, directing and writing for amateur theatre productions and small independent film ventures and now teaches Drama part-time. Her passion for dialogue and characterisation ultimately led to long-form writing with the Spark series. Rachael’s enthusiasm for classical heroes, teen angst and popular culture informs much of her creative process. She enjoys small town life at the top of the South Island of New Zealand where she lives with her husband and three daughters.
Her debut novel Spark was published by Walker Books Australia in 2014 receiving a Storylines Notable Book Award. It also made the State Library Victoria Silver Inky Awards shortlist and the shortlist for the Children’s Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction (NZCYA) for 2015. The sequel, Stray was released in 2015, winning the Children’s Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction (NZCYA) in 2016 and the final instalment in the trilogy, Shield was released in September 2016.
