Te Kōrero Ahi Kā


SpecFicNZ is seeking submissions to a new anthology titled, Te Kōrero Ahi Kā, which means to speak of the home fires burning, and is a statement about how we as creators of speculative fiction and art make our mark, shining our light on the literary landscape. This unthemed anthology will showcase the best work from members of the SpecFicNZ organisation of writers, poets, artists, and creatives.

Submissions are sought from current members of SpecFicNZ. If you are not a current member, you can join or renew here.


Submissions Open: Wednesday. 12 July 2017

Submissions close: Tuesday 31 October 2017.

Results of your submission will be notified by 30 November 2017.

Expected publication date is by 31 March 2018.


The anthology has no set theme. The only requirements are your best creative work. It could be a short story, poetry, cover art, novel excerpt or other media that can be included in an ebook and/or print edition of speculative fiction. Speculative fiction includes all genres of fantasy, horror, and science-fiction.


Do not send us fan-fiction for characters or settings where you do not own the rights.

Do not send us material that would be considered pornographic.


All written submissions must be sent in Word, or RTF formats.

Submission Details

We will consider original (unpublished in any form) and/or reprint work that you hold the rights to.

Each submission should be no more than 7500 words (shorter preferred). There is no minimum word limit.

Member submission(s) can be up to two (2) separate pieces of flash, short fiction, cover art, novel excerpt, novella, screenplay, radio-play script etc.

For poetry, member submissions of up to five (5) separate pieces will be considered for publication in the anthology.

Cover Art: Submissions are sought for suitable original art that would feature on the cover of the anthology in both ebook and print formats. If no suitable entry is submitted SpecFicNZ reserves the right to engage an artist for the cover art.

All cover art submissions should be formatted in .jpg format for consideration. Format of accepted submission will be confirmed with the artist.

All successful submissions will be paid at the following rates:

For original, unpublished work: 3 cents per word

For reprints: 1 cent per word.

Poetry: $15 per poem

Cover Art: $150

All rejected literary submissions will receive constructive feedback from the anthology editors.

 Editors and An Opportunity

Te Kōrero Ahi Kā, will be edited by award winning author and editor, Lee Murray, and Woelf Dietrich.

SpecFicNZ is also seeking a person who would like to volunteer for the position of mentee editor to work with Lee and Woelf on the editing of this anthology. This position would suit any SpecFicNZ member who seeks to gain editing experience and credit for their involvement in this publication.
