SpecFicNZ is the only writers group specifically for writers of speculative fiction in or from New Zealand.

However, there are many other local and internet writers groups, each with a different emphasis, that may benefit you as a writer.

We hope that you will check them out and lend your support.  And be sure to let us know if you have a group you’d like us to add to our list.

Canterbury Writers – A communication hub and an online community for writers in Canterbury and the rest of New Zealand, established by SpecficNZ member Judy L Mohr in 2019, now (2023) boasting a membership of over 200 writers in all genres. They host an online Discord server open to writers throughout New Zealand, and also run in-person events in Christchurch. We also keep a calendar of events that are run by other organisations in Canterbury. During 2024, they will be hosting webinars for Canterbury Writers members on writing craft.

Christchurch Writers’ Guild – A community of Christchurch writers from all genres and publication backgrounds meeting the second Monday evening (7 pm) of each month at the Undercroft (beneath the University of Canterbury James Hight Library).

Horror Writers Association – A worldwide non-profit organisation of professional writers and publishing professionals (including some fangtastic editors!) dedicated to promoting the interests of Horror and Dark Fantasy writers.

International Writers’ Workshop NZ (Auckland) – “We run workshops with well known NZ authors, 6-8 competitions, with judge feedback, a year, including the Kathleen Grattan Sequence of Poems with a prize of $1000.”
