And this week’s #SpecFicShorts winner is … Dave Catt!
“The banker’s habit was to sit deep beneath the orb of a streetlight, apparently a witless vagabond, begging most lucratively.”
Congrats to Dave, and see you all again here next week!

Writers, start your engines! Today’s #SpecFicShorts prompts are:
orb; deep; witless; vagabond; habit
Today’s competition will run until 7pm, for the after-work competitors!
The bankers habit was to sit deep beneath the orb of a streetlight, apparently a witless vagabond, begging most lucratively.
He unbuttons his scientistâs habit.
Heâs witless, useless!
Yet, deep in the petrie dish, the orbâa vagabond cellâswells.Iâm freediving so deep the pressure renders vagabonds such as I witless.
The Kraken’s glittering orb watches out of habit.

Congratulations to this week’s #SpecFicShorts winner, @Lee Murray!
Lee’s winning story:
Alchemistâs dream experiment!
No gold.
Nor is dross the only by-product.
Disgruntled, I dig a hole to bury the dragon.Tune in next week for the next prompt!

Get your writing caps on – this week’s prompt words are:
dream; disgruntled; dragon; dross; dig
Alchemistâs dream experiment!
No gold.
Nor is dross the only by-product.
Disgruntled, I dig a hole to bury the dragon. The alchemist cackles. The dragon, disgruntled that his dream hoard is dross, blasts flame. Digging fails to save the alchemist.
The disgruntled dragon groans; his dream was dross, and his cave of spiky treasures uncomfortable. Maybe he could dig bigger?

And the winner of our inaugural #SpecFic Shorts contest is … @Mark Brewer!
âGrandiloquent, really? You err nephew. Harbour no rancor nor resentment, Iâm your aunt not your mother. Your griffon, your mess!â

SPECFICNZ SHORTS!
Can you tell a story in 20 words or less, using the following five words?
Grandiloquent; griffon; harbour; aunt; err.
Leave your stories as comments to this post.
And … go!
They said to err is human, to accidentally vaporize a harbour requires a Grandiloquent Aunt on a Griffon. The end.
“Grandiloquent, really? You err nephew. Harbour no rancor nor resentment, I’m your aunt not your mother. Your griffon, your mess!”
Grandiloquent Griffon’s docking clamps released; I panicked. Aunt Err’s words echoed: “Harbours are safe, but ships aren’t built for that.”
My Auntie Griffon is not often grandiloquent, but she errs on the side of pomp when confronting the harbour board.
Room 317, Grandiloquent Hotel: his aunt dead. Griffon cleans the blade. He harbours no resentment. People err. But, only once.
You lot just have to make it difficult, don’t you? You’re all way too good at this! Judging commencing now – I’ll make a new post announcing the winner.

Hi Kate, Elizabeth Knox is doing a writers’ workshop at the Children’s Bookshop in July – not sure how many places are left (if any!) but worth checking if you are interested! Fee $25, email [email protected] to book.

Hi John, we’ve actually got something similar to your second suggestion in the planning stages at the moment – keep your eyes peeled for an announcement next week!

Sounds great! I haven’t made it to the Hop Garden yet. Poquito is another neat bar in that end of town, though I’m not sure how busy it would be on a Saturday (and it is, as the name suggests, pretty cosy!).

Thanks Freya – you make a very good point about competitions aimed at writers with less time to dedicate to them. We’ll definitely start working on some ideas based around shorter wordcounts.

We’ve got two competitions lined up for 2014 so far, and a third in the wings – which is definitely not enough! What types of competitions would you be interested in seeing this year?
