I’m in the west (Titirangi), so I’d potentially be interested. Probably not an evening unless it was an early finish (before 9).

Book 0 of my currently-four-book Gryphon Clerks series is freshly out at Amazon.
When the old shaman took Berry away from her home and family, she expected to become a shaman in turn. But after her oath shatters, she finds a new place as a Gryphon Clerk, helping negotiate a treaty with the beasthead people.
A beasthead shaman stands against her,…[Read more]

Hi Immie, I’ve been helping Mary Jones organise the last couple of meetups because she’s been busy with family matters. Sunday afternoons are probably still better than weekday evenings, as almost nobody has turned up to the weekday events that have been organised this year.

If you could do the organising, that would be super. I did talk to Jeff (Audio Foundation) about it a while ago. He said ‘a small donation of about $20’… for the venue hire, basically. And there are spots free each month – just need to discuss the exact details with him.
(Sorry to appear so lazy!! I’m just unsure what the group wants, to be honest.) As mentioned in my email, I’m also happy to host small groups at my home. I live centrally.

That could work really well for me, since I’m about to start a contract in the city. What time were you thinking?
I hadn’t given the time/day any thought, sorry. Meetups used to be Sundays during the day, but people found weekends difficult. So I guess a weekday early evening. I can look into what evenings the audio foundation is available. From my understanding, they are hoping to find groups who want a regular spot in the schedule – even if it’s a regular…[Read more]

Pleased to announce that I’ve sold a story to the funny-fantasy anthology Alternate Hilarities 3: Hysterical Realms, to come out early next year.

It’s interesting how many people say that. It’s almost the only one I don’t have a copy of, because it’s one of my least favourites – more cynical than the others, for one thing. But I realise I’m very much in a minority.
My personal favourite is Carpe Jugulum, because Granny Weatherwax is so hardcore.

It’s a lot of the usual suspects, with a strong literary bias. I would have picked a different Pratchett (I don’t think the first few are as good as some of the later ones).
Yeah, I feel like whoever put together the list hadn’t actually read the Discworld series but knew it was popular so just put the first one. Small Gods is one of my faves.

When I grow up I want to BE Granny Weatherwax.

So, with the Sir Julius Vogel Awards coming up, I thought I’d read his book, even though I’d been told it was terrible.
It’s really, really bad. I don’t suggest you read it. But if you want to know what’s in it, I’ve prepared a plot summary.

Bwahaha! So much better than the actual book, which I skimmed in an afternoon, then wondered why.
I read the first part of your review, then decided never to touch the reviewed book as long as I have vision. I then rad the rest of your review, and patted myself on the back for making my commitment after reading the first part.
Thank you for saving a fraction of my life.:: takes one for the team.

So, sell me on going to Conclave.
At the moment, the website is not achieving that. The writers’ seminar is the only bit I’m at all interested in, and I’m not signing up blind for two three-hour sessions without knowing who the speakers are or what they’re talking about.
Yes the website isn’t really a great advertisement for the Conclave is it, LOL. There is a Facebook page where some discussions are happening around panels etc: https://www.facebook.com/groups/259297837528528/321605271297784/?notif_t=group_activity
It seems a little up in the air at the moment, but hopefully we’ll get a full programme soon. The writers’ seminar is being conducted by Dave Freer (as far as I can gather from the info on the Facebook page).
Some SpecFicNZ members (Dan Rabarts and Eileen Mueller come to mind) proposed some panels by and for writers for the Saturday. I’m not sure what’s been accepted by the con committee, though.
Full disclosure: I’m not going this year…[Read more]
Well that suits me as my kids wake me pretty early so I try not to stay up too late 🙂 I live in Ranui. Would 7 to 7.30 work? I don’t know how long the meeting would last, depends on numbers I guess.
