Freya’s heart thudded. This was it. The moment she’d been waiting for. She turned in her saddle and gazed at the army spread across the plain: immediately behind her the cavalry, mounted on their steeds, the weak sun glinting off their polished armour. Behind them the infantry waited—the archers with their bows at the ready, quivers of arrows slung on their backs; the foot soldiers armed with spear and sword. All clad in shiny breastplates, helmets, and greaves.

Freya herself wore the Armour of Tyrelia: the helmet, breastplate, and shoes. The studded shield she’d received upon entering Tyrelia nestled snugly against her back and the sword was strapped at her waist with the belt. The silver was burnished to a sheen.

Was she up to the task? She bit her lip. These people believed in her. She turned back to face the target of their attack, the seven-tiered Golden City. Unsheathing her sword in a single fluid motion, she raised it overhead. She took a deep breath and called out their enemy.

“Master of the Golden City! In the name of the Ancient, who rules Tyrelia, let the citizens go.”

As her words died out, an eerie silence descended, as though the Land itself was holding its breath. Then from the heart of the City issued a deep rumbling. It swelled and swelled, until the air around them throbbed with the mocking laughter of the Master. You? it seemed to say. But you’re only a girl.

It was true. She was only fourteen. But that hadn’t stopped her unlocking the mystery of the Tablet to find the long-lost path to Tyrelia. Along the way, she’d been helped by the Watchers with their gift of invisibility and discovered that she was the subject of a one-thousand-year-old prophecy. Then, when it turned out that she was the only one who could get through the Wall, she’d entered Tyrelia alone and followed new clues to find the hermit. She lifted her chin in defiance. Let the Master underestimate her.

At that moment, a single flaming arrow shot from the top-most turret of the City. She watched it, transfixed, as it traced a smoky arc towards her. Closer and closer. She wanted to run, but she was frozen. It was heading straight for her. Do something. Move!

Noooo! It pierced her chest. She screamed. Clutching the arrow, she toppled in slow-motion from her horse and tumbled to the ground.

Freya woke with a start, her heart hammering. Her sheets were tangled about her legs and a clammy sweat dotted her brow. It was just a nightmare.
